Fictitious Super heroes wear capes and perform impossible feats.  They are seen in the media, movies, represented in toys and clothing merchandise and rake in millions for their producers. However, the one inescapable fact is that these super heroes only exist as fiction.

To see real life heroes in action, look no further than home. Our mothers, sisters and daughters are unsung heroines for their unstinting role in caring for their households 24/7. They ensure that notwithstanding evolutionary changes in our lifestyle and society over the years, they provide unyielding support on all aspects, including the provision of good and wholesome Halaal meals.

They have adapted from the norms of yesteryears when mothers and sisters were dedicated to the home, blended their own spices, baked bread, used fresh vegetables, slaughtered their own home-reared chickens, purchased meat from the local Muslim butcher known to the family, and served wholesome sit-down family meals. Today, the reality is that women are increasingly entering the workplace than being at home. The concept of the sit down family dinner is disappearing from homes.

And whilst Ramadhaan is all about Ibaadah, attaining forgiveness and ultimately gaining proximity to Allah Ta’ala, another reality is the preparation for the Ramadhaan sehri and iftaar table. This at times is borne more out of tradition and culture than anything else. This is when our heroes spring into action well before Ramadhaan, to ensure the family’s dietary needs are met without compromising their ibaadah time. The goal is to spend minimum preparation time in the kitchen during Ramadhaan and maximum time in ibaadah. They work tirelessly in advance preparation of iftaar savouries, haleem and the like.

Over the years, SANHA has borne witness to this struggle and we find that in the months leading to Ramadhaan, our helpline queries spike with enquiries from the womenfolk regarding raw materials and ingredients in preparation for Ramadhaan meals.
