Knowledge is power, knowledge is light, is an adage that extols the merits and advocates the institution of learning and teaching. Throughout the annals of history, education was the key to the success and progress of a society.

The spread of Islam from its first flicker of light in the Arabian desert, 14 centuries ago, to every corner of the globe today can be attributed to the seeking of knowledge as a virtue. In Islam, knowledge is not merely an intellectual endeavour; it is a sacred obligation and a means of drawing nearer to Allah, the Exalted. The pursuit of knowledge encompasses both religious and worldly sciences, yet it is always rooted in the recognition of the Divine as the source of all wisdom.

The Noble Qur’aan and teachings of the Prophet (peace be upon him) are replete with numerous verses on the sacred and mandatory seeking of knowledge aimed at understanding our Creator and benefitting humanity, one of them being, “….Allah will raise those who believe among you and those who were given knowledge, by many degrees. And Allah is All-Aware of what you do” (Surah Al-Mujaadilah 58:11)

From time immemorial, teachers have been held in high esteem in every society. A teacher affects eternity and is the mother of all professions. In Islam, teachers are granted loftier status for they follow in the footsteps of the teacher of Mankind, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). They are not just teachers. They bear the great responsibility of moulding and shaping the future flag-bearers of Islam. In their hands lies the safeguarding of the Deen for generations to come.
