The month of Safar serves as a timely reminder of one of Islam’s enduring teachings. Prior to the advent of Islam, many people regarded Safar as a month of misfortune. Rasulullah (sallallāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam) categorically rejected this superstition, affirming that no time, place or object possesses the power to benefit or harm independently of Allah Ta’ala.

In dispelling such false beliefs, Islam established a timeless principle: truth must prevail over falsehood, and honesty over deception. This principle remains as relevant today as it was over fourteen centuries ago.

As awareness and demand for Halaal-certified products continue to grow, so too does the value and trust associated with recognised Halaal certification. Unfortunately, this has also created opportunities for some to exploit that trust through misleading Halaal claims, the unauthorised use of certification marks, or representations that create the impression of independent Halaal certification where none exists.

SANHA has, from time to time, encountered instances where certification marks have been used without authorisation or where Halaal certification has been falsely claimed. Such practices mislead consumers, undermine confidence in genuine Halaal certification, and disadvantage businesses that have invested in maintaining recognised Halaal standards.

Recognised Halaal certification is far more than the display of a logo on a product. It represents an independent process of assessment, verification and ongoing monitoring, providing consumers with confidence that products comply with recognised Halaal requirements.

“And do not mix the truth with falsehood, nor knowingly conceal the truth.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah: 42)

Preserving the integrity of Halaal is a shared responsibility. Businesses must uphold honesty in the claims they make, while consumers should remain informed and exercise due care when making purchasing decisions.

Look for recognised Halaal certification when purchasing Halaal products. If you are ever in doubt about the Halaal status of a product or the authenticity of a Halaal claim, do not rely on assumption. Contact SANHA for verification before making your purchase.

As we reflect on the lessons of Safar, let us renew our commitment to the values that Islam teaches so emphatically: truth over falsehood, integrity over deception, and certainty over assumption. Together, we can help protect the integrity of Halaal and preserve the confidence of the Muslim consumer.
