As the 9th of Dhul Hijjah approaches, millions of pilgrims will converge on the plains of Arafah to observe the Wuquf, the most significant aspect of Hajj. This gathering, which symbolizes Islamic unity and brotherhood, will see an estimated 2 million pilgrims come together, transcending race, gender, nationality, financial status, and social standing.
Over 1,400 years ago, on these very plains of Arafah, Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam delivered the Farewell Sermon during Hajjatul Wida (The Farewell Pilgrimage) to about 10,000 Sahabah radhiyallahu anhum. This sermon established the foundational principles and guidelines for all humanity.
Reflect on these few salient points from the historic address:
“O People, just as you regard this month, this day, this city as Sacred, so regard the life and property of every Muslim as a sacred trust. Return the goods entrusted to you to their rightful owners. Hurt no one so that none may hurt you. Remember that you will indeed meet your Lord, and that He will indeed reckon your deeds.”
“Beware of Shaytaan for the safety of your religion. He has lost all hope that he will ever be able to lead you astray in big things, so beware of following him in small things.”
In the Noble Qur’aan, Chapter 2, Verse 168, the Islamic dietary regulation is clear:
“O humanity! Eat from what is lawful and good on the earth and do not follow Shaytaan’s footsteps. He is truly your sworn enemy.”
The implication of this verse is that neglecting Halaal consumption is akin to following in the footsteps of Shaytaan, our sworn enemy. Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam warned in the Farewell Sermon, that following Shaytaan in smaller matters will inevitably lead to following him in more significant matters, such as the consumption of doubtful and Haraam substances, and engaging in sin.
We wish all our Hujjaaj a Hajj Maqbool and Mabroor. May you return in a state of total purity, heightened spirituality, embedded faith, and assured amnesty. Aameen.
