During the dark period of Ignorance before the advent of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam and the enlightenment of Islam, the month of Safar was considered a month of ill omens, misfortune and calamities. Some of these misconceptions have endured in some form or the other in some communities to this day. Superstition and corrupt beliefs, such as new ventures and marriages must not commence in this month, or distributing money or food on the 13th of the month will save one from bad luck and misfortune, were debunked by the numerous teachings of the Noble Qur’aan and the sayings of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam.

“No kind of calamity can occur, except by the will of Allah: and if any one believes in Allah, (Allah) guides his heart (aright): for Allah knows all things” (Ch 64 – Verse 11)

The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam  said, “There is no bad omen in the month of Safar and no Ghouls (evil spirits).” (Sahih Muslim)

He sallallahu alayhi wasallam also said: There is no superstitious owl, bird, no star-promising rain, no bad omen in the month of Safar. (al-Bukhari)

Whilst Islam rejects ill omens and superstitions, it offers advice on adopting caution when red flags appear.

In the world of Halaal, with globalisation and mass production, there are red flags which threaten the status of Halaal. A Muslim must be constantly aware and cautious of what he eats.

Here are some red flags to be wary of;

Halaal Friendly – It is either Halaal or not! Click here for an explainer https://www.sanha.org.za/flashnews/2020/flashn166.html

Claims that meat products are purchased from Muslim suppliers – With no independent oversight, one cannot rely on such claims that the end product is Halaal.

Alcohol served on the premises – A definite no-go zone!

Generic Halaal Emblems – Be ultra cautious. Any establishment confident on its Halaal assurance will seek independent certification of a reputable body and not pass off assurance through a “no name” Halaal sign downloaded from the internet.

May Allah Ta’ala save us from consuming Haraam and grant us the ability to identify red flags and steer clear of the doubtful & unlawful, Aameen
